Nova Biomedical has been recognized as a supplier to the 2004 Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) winner for its contribution to the Paradigm Link™ intelligent glucose meter, manufactured by Becton-Dickinson and Company. Developed by Nova Biomedical in conjunction with Medtronic MiniMed (Northridge, CA), the Paradigm Link is the world’s first
non-tethered wireless glucose meter for diabetics. This unique system provides
bi-directional communication between the Becton Dickinson BD Logic™ Glucose Monitor and the Medtronic Mini-Med Insulin Pump. Using RF signals, the Paradigm Link instantly communicates current glucose level data from the glucose meter
to the insulin pump which then adjusts insulin dosages to achieve the desired glucose level.

The Paradigm Link helps remove the guesswork in insulin dosing, making it easier for patients to manage their diabetes. This integrated system combines and simplifies two important steps in diabetes management -- blood sugar (glucose) monitoring and insulin dosing -- with the goal of helping patients keep their blood sugar levels within a normal range, which can lead to improved health and extended life for many patients. Using wireless technology, the Paradigm Link monitor automatically transmits a blood sugar reading to the Medtronic Mini-Med insulin pump. The pump’s calculator performs "diabetes math," recommending
the proper insulin dosage based upon information preset by the user.

More than 1 million Americans with Type 1 diabetes and another 3 million Type 2 diabetes patients are estimated to use insulin to control blood sugar levels, improve their health and attain a better quality of life. High and low blood sugar fluctuations can cause loss of consciousness or even death, as well as long-term complications, such as blindness, kidney failure, amputation, impotence. and heart disease. For many patients, managing diabetes is difficult without frequent blood glucose monitoring and the use of an insulin pump.

"The power of glucose monitoring and the benefits of insulin pump therapy are now combined in a patient-friendly system that can simplify and improve diabetes management," said Kevin Seifert, president, BD Consumer Healthcare.
Established in 1998, the Medical Design Excellent Awards program is the premier awards program for the medical technology community. The program is open worldwide to companies and individuals involved in the design, engineering, manufacture, or distribution of finished medical devices or medical packaging.
The 2004 ceremony will be held at the Medical Design & Manufacturing East Conference and Exposition in New York City, June 16, at 11:00 AM.
